Celebrities and their secret lives

by Georgia Van Cuylenburg

Everyday our TVs, radios, twitter feeds and conversations are filled with the latest celebrity gossip: “Singer caught with drugs at airport,” “Movie Star cheats on husband who has baby with other woman,” “Model puts on 5 pounds,” etc. But is that really all they are? And more importantly is that the part of their lives we really should be talking about? What about the good things they do, the money they donate to charity and the difference they make in people’s lives?

I’ve had enough – no more secrets famous people. I’m blowing the lid off your bad boy façade!

Here are three celebrities who have been headlining the gossip news recently and here are the super awesome things they have done that I think should be making headline news:

Solange Knowles

We all know, and have seen, that Solange got in a ‘bit of a bingle’ with her brother-in-law Jay-Z. We have seen her kick him over and over again, on repeat, slow motion in reverse…. but did you know that Solange is currently partnered with the 14+ Foundation to develop, build and operate schools for children in under-served communities in Africa? She has also spoken out in support of the fight against blood cancer. She also got all of her celebrity pals to rally together and purchase her single when it launched in 2011 – all proceeds went towards clean water access in Africa. You were saying something about an elevator?

Tom Cruise

When Tom and Katie split, the tabloids were full of tales of him being a bad parent, that Katie had escaped his iron grip and the good old “I knew he was gay” cries, despite the fact that none of these claims can be proven.

Here are a few things you didn’t hear about Tom: After overcoming dyslexia, Cruise became a founding Board Member for the Hollywood Education and Literacy Project (H.E.L.P.), helping students learn how to read and succeed, and received the Excellence in Mentoring Award from the National Mentoring Partnership for his work with the organization. In 1996 Cruise stopped at a hit and run accident in Santa Monica, CA, rescuing a Brazilian woman from her car. He took her to the hospital and paid her medical bills.

At the 1996 London première of Mission Impossible, Cruise pulled two children out of the way of an onrushing crowd. In the same year, while sailing near Capri, Cruise saved people from a burning sailboat. As for the money he has donated to charity over the years… don’t even get me started. You jump on what ever couch you want Tom!

George Clooney

The man whose face could sell a million magazines is always adorning covers, websites and women’s dreams. He has never been able to escape the “who is he dating?” “never going to settle down!” and “won’t marry” headlines but now, thanks to recent awesome developments, all people want to talk about is the woman that tamed George Clooney! But Ladies and Gentlemen, should we really be surprised that he ended up with a woman with an awesome brain, a huge heart and no plastic surgery?

Well you might be because no one has been telling you that George is one of the most charitable people in Hollywood, both with his checkbook and with his blood, sweat and tears. Along with his current mission to stop the human rights atrocities in the Darfur region of Sudan, he focuses much of his energy on helping those suffering from poverty. Clooney famously founded Not On Our Watch with his Ocean’s 11 co-stars Don Cheadle, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, and producer Jerry Weintraub. The organization’s main goal is to stop the genocide occurring in Sudan. Clooney has visited the area personally, and spoken with many victims. His charity has donated millions of dollars to help those suffering in the region, with much of the funding going through the United Nations World Food Programme. So if you were wondering if giving back is sexy ladies – just ask George Clooney!

I’m not saying every celebrity that has been featured on TMZ in the last 6 months is an angel in devil’s clothing… in fact I am sorry to say most really aren’t! However there are a good number of celebrities that do incredible things for those in need all around the world and I think that deserves just as much airspace as who they’ve been locking lips with recently.
