Best Hollywood
love story ever told

Tootsie is the perfect love story. It’s funny and filled with love: friendship love (Dustin Hoffman & Bill Murray), love of career (what DH did to get a job), unrequited love (DH & Jessica Lange), love when you think you’d never love again (Dorothy & Charles Durning) & finally, hopefully real love (DH & JL). Plus it’s a Valentine to NYC.Kate Axelrod

The Notebook – Ashley Ballard, Eddie Gamarra, Eileen Grubba, Kate Neligan, Erin Stam

Obviously my and my girlfriend’s since we met in Los Angeles. It was a jhorts themed party. – Jason Benoit, Esq.

Jack and Ellie is my favorite Hollywood love story… along with Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, and if I may be so bold, my husband’s and mine 🙂 – Kara Holden

Heaven Can Wait – the Warren Beatty/Buck Henry version. I watch that movie every time I’m blue. It gives me hope. Go figure. – Susan Johnson

The Circus – Dan Katzir

Cluny Brown – Ravit Markus

I hate to be so corny but Love Story starring Ryan O’Neil and Ali McGraw left an indelible impression on me as a child. His devotion to Ali’s character as she was dying was so romantic. Apparently, off camera it was a typical Hollywood love story as well. – Elizabeth Much

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (well, Hollywood by way of France) – Abdi Nazemian

Her (in 2013)Fight Club, Shop Around The Corner (timeless classics) – Nancy Nigrosh

It’s so hard to pick just one. The first romantic movie that left its mark on me was A Little Romance (1979) with Diane Lane (her first movie), Thelonious Bernard and Laurence Oliver. I must have watched it 50 times! I suppose it set the bar for me. – Alana Sanko

Reds and Fiddler on the Roof... love those Russian films where everyone has to travel to a distant land for their love and then be in the middle of big historic events and cling to each other, while chaos ensues all around them and their love sees them through and proves they were meant for each other. – Dr. Linda Seger

The Shawshank Redemption, Notting Hill, Her – Alan Smyth

For me, hands down, Reds. Diane Keaton (Louise Bryant) is frantically looking for Warren Beatty (Harry Reed) at the train station. When she thinks all is lost, she turns around and there she finds him, standing, looking worn and battered, in her direction. The music begins to swell and we watch her expression turn from fear to relief as she begins to walk to him slow, but steady and she then throws her arms around him and her look of relief turns into sheer, unconditional love. C’mon, you can’t beat that! – Rebecca Stay

It actually hasn’t happened yet. It’s the brief but impactful romance between North West and Blue Ivy Carter. A love that knew no boundaries, and invited us all to witness on the short-lived series Keeping Up w/Beyonce Jr. – Erin “Queenie” Stegeman

Most romantic line in film
ever written

“As you wish.” (Princess Bride) – Jaime Becker, Todd Felderstein, Ravit Markus

“You had me at hello.” (Jerry Maguire) – Jason Benoit, Esq., Alana Sanko

“Hey, Stella!!!” (A Streetcar Named Desire Stanley Kowalski) – Stella Braintree

“You make me want to be a better man.” – (As Good As It GetsMelvin Udall (played by Jack Nicholson)) – Pamela Buchignani

“The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.” (Moulin Rougealthough I guess it was originally Nat King Cole who said that?) – Jessica Cabot

“I knew it the very first time I touched her. It was like coming home… only to no home I’d ever known… I was just taking her hand to help her out of a car and I knew.” (Sleepless in Seattle) – Felicia Cameron Leger

“I don’t know you, but I want you all the more for that. Words fall through me and always fool me. And I can’t react.” (Once) – Dara Resnik Creasey

“We’ll always have Paris” is such a simple and powerful line. Their love rises above their circumstances. And Bogart (Rick) takes the rough and high road when he declares, “Inside of us, we both know you belong with Victor. You’re part of his work, the thing that keeps him going. If that plane leaves the ground and you’re not with him, you’ll regret it. Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life. Ilsa: But what about us? Rick: We’ll always have Paris.” – Craig Detweiler

“We’ll always have Paris” (Casablanca) is also a favorite of Lindsay Devlin, Susan Johnson, Nancy Nigrosh

“You know how to whistle don’t you?” (To Have and Have Not) – Craig Emanuel

“I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.” (When Harry Met Sally – Harry Burns) – Jill Effron, Maren Fischer, Kenn Henman, Kara Holden, Susan Johnson, Abdi Nazemian

“I wish I knew how to quit you.” (Brokeback Mountain) – Shannon Gaulding

Technically Harrison Ford ad libbed the “I know” so it’s not the best ever written, but…
Han Solo: [as Chewie tries to fight off the imperials and free Han] No! Stop, Chewie, stop! Chewie! Chewie this won’t help me! Hey! Save your strength. There’ll be another time. The Princess. You have to take care of her. You hear me? Huh?
[Leia and Han share a passionate kiss before Han is dragged towards the freezing chamber by the imperials]
Princess Leia: I love you.
Han Solo: I know.
(The Empire Strikes Back) – Eddie Gamarra, Kara Holden

“Well, you can’t marry someone when you’re in love with someone else… can you?” (The Sound of MusicCaptain von Trapp to Maria) – Eileen Grubba

“I’m scared of walking out of this room and never feeling the rest of my whole life the way I feel when I’m with you.” (Dirty Dancing) – Eileen Grubba

While “Nobody puts Baby in a corner” is up there, I still have to go with “Here’s looking at you, kid.” (Dirty Dancing / Casablanca) – Jason Hariton

“I’m in love with you… How do you like that. I buried the lead.” – Albert Brooks (Broadcast News). Holly Hunter’s reaction, which is to wince, is brutal! But his line, after a long, angry speech, is amazing. – Barbara Haynes

“Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a while.” (The Princess Bride) – Kara Holden

Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, she walks into mine.” (Casablanca) – Dan Katzir

Love means never having to say I’m sorry (Love Story). Though now having been married it seems ridiculous. – Elizabeth Much

“I’ll have what she’s having!” (When Harry Met Sally) – Kate Neligan

“This kind of certainty comes but once in a lifetime.” (The Bridges of Madison CountyClint Eastwood to Meryl Streep) – Taj Paxton

“… I only wish there were two lives apportioned to every man.” (The Prince of TidesNick Nolte returning home to his wife, but leaving part of his heart with Barbra Streisand) – Taj Paxton

When Lloyd Dobler (John Cusack) played Peter Gabriel’s song “In Your Eyes” in Say Anything. He didn’t even need to speak. – Mia Schaikewitz

The lines Gene Kelly says to Debbie Reynolds in Singin’ in the Rain when he fights for her career… something like “we can’t let her get away with this or Debbie will never have the career she deserves…” – and he announces he loves her in front of the audience. – Dr. Linda Seger

“You want the moon? Just say the word and I’ll throw a lasso around it and pull it down” (It’s A Wonderful Life) – Alan Smyth

“To me, you are perfect” (Love Actually) – Erin Stam

Can you keep a secret? I’m trying to organize a prison break. I’m looking for, like, an accomplice. We have to first get out of this bar, then the hotel, then the city, and then the country. Are you in or you out? (Lost in Translation) – Erin “Queenie” Stegeman

I give this with a caveat. There’s no such thing as most romantic line ever. There are far too many to count. Well, there’s got to be at least fifty. For now, the one that comes to mind is:
“You had me at hello.” – (Jerry Maguire Dorothy (Renée Zellweger) to Jerry (Tom Cruise)) – Rebecca Stay

Can we do reverse romantic? “I have wasted thousands and thousands of kisses on you – kisses that I thought were special because of your lips and your smile and all your color and life. I used to think that was the real you, when you smiled. But now I know you don’t mean any of it. You just save it for all your songs. Shame on me for kissing you with my eyes closed so tight.” (That Things You Do!) – Georgia Van Cuylenburg
